Independent transparency for Canadian retirement living.

Vitrine Retirement Institute is a federal not-for-profit corporation that makes the Canadian private-pay retirement residence market transparent for families and accountable to data.

Why we exist

Canadian families searching for a retirement residence face a market where the leading directories list only the operators who pay to appear. Absence from these directories signals non-payment, not non-existence, and families cannot tell the difference. No Canadian organization currently publishes independent, comparative quality data on private-pay retirement residences.

At the same time, the federal government has discontinued the national data collection that tracked rents, vacancies, and the size of the seniors housing market. The industry itself has formally requested its restoration.

Vitrine Retirement Institute occupies both gaps with a single data pipeline: a free public ranking for families and a commercial market dataset for institutions, funded by data sales rather than operator payments.

What we build

For families

Vitrine Retirement Index

A free, complete register and ranking of every licensed retirement residence in Canada, weighted by inspection history, care scope, and non-compliance findings. Coverage is earned by licensure, not purchased by operators.

For institutions

Vitrine Seniors Housing Census

A national rent, vacancy, and universe dataset continuing the methodology of the discontinued CMHC Seniors' Housing Survey. Available by subscription to operators, lenders, developers, and researchers on both sides of the market.

Our independence

The usefulness of a ranking depends entirely on who paid for it. Vitrine Retirement Institute is structured so that no operator can purchase placement, ranking position, or inclusion in any form. This prohibition covers listing fees, featured placement, membership dues, sponsored content, and referral commissions. It is absolute.
